About the author

Yu Huai was a writer of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Public information about him is limited, and his birth and death years, native place, and biographical details are difficult to verify. Judging from his surviving works, he was known for his notebook-style essays, most notably Miscellaneous Records of Banqiao. This work is divided into three volumes: Elegant Travels, Beautiful Persons, and Anecdotes, and has also circulated in collected and selected editions. Its contents chiefly record the customs, people, courtesans, and former pleasures of the Qinhuai area in Jinling. The style is refined and tinged with melancholy, making the book valuable both as historical material and as literature. The library holds six of his works, all related to Miscellaneous Records of Banqiao, commonly classified under classic works, literary appreciation, and prose miscellanies. Yu Huai's writing thus leans toward reminiscence and realistic record, skillfully conveying a sense of dynastic rise and fall through trivial observations, and his texts offer useful insight into urban life and literati mentality during the Ming-Qing transition.
