About the author

He Yuan, whose biographical details are scarce in publicly available sources, nonetheless left behind texts that offer a valuable window into the lives and observations of Song dynasty literati. Two works survive under his name, the representative titles Chunzhu Jiweng and Qingxiang Zaji. The former records anecdotes, comments on poetry and prose, and miscellaneous notes on natural and antiquarian lore; its relaxed style and broad range have made it a frequently consulted source for the social and cultural life of the Song period. The latter is likewise a collection of miscellaneous notes, combining institutional and historical material with literary and textual observations. Both belong to the traditional notebook genre, concise in narration and attentive to factual record, and within the categories of classic works and Eastern philosophy they show the combination of erudition and anecdotal interest characteristic of Song literati notebooks. Although He Yuan's dates, native place, and official career cannot be verified, his writings are still valued for preserving historical material and anecdotes, and are often cited by scholars of Song notebook literature and cultural history.
