About the author

Yi Yin is an important figure in ancient Chinese texts associated with the founding of the Shang dynasty. The works Xian You Yi De and Yi Xun are traditionally attributed to him, and these are the two titles held in this collection. Publicly available information about his dates, nationality, and life details is limited and difficult to verify. Judging from the transmitted texts, these two works are political admonitions from the early Shang period, framed around dialogues between ruler and minister and teachings on virtuous governance. Their language is archaic and concise, carrying the flavor of early political and philosophical reflection, and they are therefore often classified under Eastern philosophy and philosophical readings. Their content centers on the principles of statecraft and the virtues of governance, emphasizing the connection between the ruler's self-cultivation and the conduct of government. They have had an inspiring influence on later Confucian political ethics and the idea of rule by virtue, and they serve as an important entry point for understanding early Chinese thought and textual traditions.
