About the author

Ren Yuan (1938–2010) was a Shanghai-born professor at the Television School of the Communication University of China and a scholar of documentary film. After graduating from the Department of Journalism at Renmin University of China in 1959, he took part in the founding of the Beijing Broadcasting Institute and devoted his career to teaching and researching television production. He directed or edited more than thirty documentaries, including The Silk Road, and wrote over twenty books, among them Fundamentals of Television Directing, A Brief History of World Documentary, and Concepts and Methods of Documentary. Six of his works are held in this collection. Beyond television and documentary studies, they range from China's population development strategy to popular readings of classical texts such as the Zhouyi Cantong Qi and the Yugong, as well as introductions to psychology, inspirational personal growth, and management—reflecting his wide-ranging interests and his gift for turning specialized knowledge into plain, accessible prose.
