About the author

Yan Congjian was a Ming-dynasty scholar of documentary records, though public sources offer limited information about his life, and his birth and death years, native place, and official career are difficult to verify. Among the works attributed to him, the most notable is the three-volume Shuyu Zhouzi Lu, which deals largely with neighboring peoples, foreign states, and records of contacts between China and other lands in the Ming period, combining historical and geographical notes with material on the tribute system. The work draws on a wide range of sources, is clearly organized, and is written in a plain, practical style, reflecting the author's attention to frontier and foreign affairs. Because original materials are scattered and research is scarce, scholarly discussion of the man and his work remains limited, yet the Shuyu Zhouzi Lu has long been consulted by historians and geographers as an important source for Ming perceptions of the wider world and for Sino-foreign relations.
