Buqisheng is a Chinese author whose signature provides little information: the real name, courtesy name, life dates, nationality, and biography are all unrecorded, and publicly available material is limited. According to library holdings, two works currently appear under this name, the representative one being An Unofficial History of Wu Zetian, commonly classified under general biography and social sciences. The book takes the historical figure Wu Zetian as its subject and belongs to the tradition of unofficial history biography, typically falling between formal historical records and popular anecdotes, with an emphasis on storytelling and readability. Such writing is not uncommon in modern popular historical works, which use historical figures to present anecdotes while combining information with entertainment. Because very little about the author can be verified, it is difficult to describe the full scope of his or her writing career; one can only infer from the surviving works an interest in historical figures and a popular narrative approach. The works offer some reference value for understanding the popular transmission of Wu Zetian's image and the style of popular biographical writing.
