About the author

Ding Shaoyi was a Qing-dynasty scholar of ci (lyric poetry). Very little is known about his life: his native place, birth and death dates, and other key details are not clearly recorded in publicly available sources, and scholarly discussion of him remains quite limited. The more reliable clues come from his own writings. He compiled the work of ci criticism Tingqiu sheng guan cihua (Remarks on Ci from the Hall of Listening to Autumn Sounds), and is also associated with Dongying shilüe (A Brief Account of the East). The library holds three of his works in total. Judging from the format and content of Tingqiu sheng guan cihua, Ding was well versed in the ci poets and works from the Tang and Song dynasties onward. He paid attention to examining ci tunes, tonal rules, and the circumstances behind individual works, and he also commented on the Qing-dynasty ci scene, reflecting the Qing trend in ci scholarship that valued both textual study and literary criticism. Because biographical material is limited, a fuller understanding of the man and his scholarship awaits the discovery of new sources.
