About the author

John A. White is an American mammalogist at the Natural History Museum of the University of Kansas, specializing in the taxonomy and anatomy of chipmunks. In the 1950s he published several papers on North American chipmunks, covering the geographic distribution and taxonomy of the chipmunks of Wyoming, the genera and subgenera of chipmunks, the baculum in the chipmunks of western North America, and the taxonomy of Eutamias quadrivittatus and Eutamias umbrinus, and he described a new chipmunk specimen from the Black Hills. Grounded in specimen anatomy and geographic distribution, his work provided a foundational reference for chipmunk taxonomy at the time. Public information is limited, and details of his life are largely unavailable; five of his works are held in the collection.
