Washington Irving

Washington Irving was an important early American writer, often called "the father of American literature." Public information is limited, so his birth and death dates, education, and specific life experiences are not elaborated here. The collection contains 17 of his works, spanning foreign literature, essays and miscellany, and world history. His representative work The Legend of Sleepy Hollow tells a rural ghost story in a humorous tone and has circulated widely; A History of New York adopts a mock-historical narrative set in the Dutch colonial period, combining satire and parody; The Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon blends essays, character sketches, and folk tales in an elegant, unhurried style. Old Christmas recalls traditional holiday customs. His writing fuses local legend, historical imagination, and personal observation, with lucid, witty language, and was pioneering in helping American literature move beyond European imitation and develop its own character.
