About the author

Strabo was an ancient Greek geographer and historian, born in Amaseia in Pontus, Asia Minor. His birth and death years cannot be reliably determined, and available public information is limited. He wrote the 17-volume Geographica, completed around 21 BCE, the only surviving work that comprehensively covers the known peoples and regions of the Greek and Roman world in the Augustan age. The library holds three works, including volumes 1, 2, and 3 of The Geography of Strabo, showing how this great work has come down to us volume by volume. Combining personal observation with earlier accounts, it systematically describes the mountains, rivers, peoples, customs, and products of various regions, partaking of both geography and history, and offering later generations precious and continuous source material for understanding the ancient Mediterranean world.
