About the author

Katherine Stokes was an American writer of juvenile literature in the early twentieth century, best known for the Motor Maids series of adventure novels. The series follows a group of young women as they travel by automobile and explore places overseas. Representative titles include The Motor Maids by Palm and Pine, The Motor Maids at Sunrise Camp, The Motor Maids in Fair Japan, The Motor Maids by Rose, Shamrock and Thistle, The Motor Maids' School Days, and The Motor Maids Across the Continent. Six of her works are held in this collection. Published around the 1910s by the New York firm Hurst, these books were often illustrated and vividly reflected the automobile craze of the time and the broadening horizons of women, presenting a new image of young women leaving home and setting off on motoring journeys. Public information about her birth and death dates and personal life is limited.
