Thomas Oldham (1816–1878) was a British geologist who played an important role in the early development of geological surveying in India and served as the first director of the Geological Survey of India. The library currently holds only one work by him, titled Poetry, which shows that his writing was not confined to geological science but also extended to literary creation. Because public information is limited, reliable Chinese records of the specific themes, style, and influence of his poetry are lacking, and no conjecture is made here. On the available evidence, he is known to later generations primarily as a geologist, while his literary endeavors form a lesser-known aspect of his life. Readers who wish to understand the character of his work should return to the work itself and judge it in light of the original text, rather than inferring his poetic style solely from his identity as a scientist.
