About the author

Longus is the author of the ancient Greek novel Daphnis and Chloe, yet almost nothing is known about his life: his nationality, birth and death dates are all unrecorded, and available public information is very limited. Judging from his surviving work, he excelled at portraying the growth of love between young men and women in a pastoral, idyllic style, with fresh and delicate prose and a gift for depicting natural scenery and innocent emotion. Besides Daphnis and Chloe, the collection also includes his Greek original and a related English compilation, The Greek Romances of Heliodorus, Longus and Achilles Tatius, showing that his work has often been transmitted alongside the tradition of ancient Greek romance, exerting a lasting influence on later pastoral love narratives.
