Frontinus, Sextus Julius was a Roman statesman and military engineer. Public sources offer limited information about his birth and death dates and early life, so his biographical outline can only be pieced together from his surviving works. He wrote On the Water Supply of the City of Rome, a systematic account of the sources, routes, volumes, and maintenance of Rome's aqueducts, an important document for the study of ancient urban water systems. The library also holds his Stratagems (Les stratagèmes), a collection of military stratagems and battlefield examples from Greek and Roman history, arranged by type. Clear in structure, it combines the character of a practical manual with that of a historical compilation and has had some influence on later military writing and strategic thought. His prose is concise and pragmatic, attentive to concrete cases and engineering detail, reflecting practical experience in government and military command.
