About the author

David Herbert Lawrence (1885–1930) was an English novelist and poet, and one of the representative figures of twentieth-century modernist literature. He was born into a miner's family in Nottinghamshire, an early environment that shaped his lasting concern with industrial civilization and the spiritual condition of modern people. He is best known for novels such as Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley's Lover; Sons and Lovers, his representative work, is often read as a coming-of-age story. Lawrence wrote boldly about industrialization, class divisions, and relations between the sexes, with delicate prose and psychological depth, leaving a lasting influence on the modern English novel. He died in Vence, France, in 1930.
