About the author

Davison Dalziel (1852–1928) was a British newspaper magnate and Conservative politician, born in London. He worked in journalism in Australia and the United States in his early years, an overseas experience that laid the groundwork for his later career. After returning to Britain, he founded Dalziel's News Agency and went on to take over several newspapers, becoming an influential figure in the press world while also active in politics as a Member of Parliament. In the 1880s he printed in Chicago a series of parodies based on the famous Gilbert and Sullivan operas, including parodies of Patience, Princess Ida and Iolanthe; these were humorous in tone and reflected the entertaining character of Victorian popular publishing. Public information about his early education and private life is limited. In Chinese contexts his works are often classified under inspirational growth, though they are better regarded as satirical light literary pieces.
