About the author

Stephen Angus Cox (1863–1944) was an American author of historical fiction for young readers, born in McDonough County, Illinois. He is best known for the Dare Boys series, which runs to more than ten volumes and includes The Dare Boys of 1776, The Dare Boys in Virginia, and The Dare Boys with General Greene. The stories follow the Dare brothers and their friends as they join the Continental Army during the American Revolution and face the British and Loyalists in a series of adventures; they were issued in the early twentieth century by publishers such as A. L. Chatterton of New York. Three of his works are held in this catalog, commonly classified under inspirational growth. Public information on his life and writing career is limited, and his influence rests mainly on bringing Revolutionary War history to young readers through accessible adventure narratives.
