Brooks, Amy

Amy Brooks is an author of English-language children's literature about whom very little is publicly known; her nationality, dates of birth and death, and educational background cannot be confirmed from available sources. Judging by the eight works held in the collection, she wrote chiefly for young readers, with girls as her central characters. Her representative works include the Randy series and the Dorothy Dainty series, such as Randy and Her Friends and Randy's Summer: A Story for Girls, along with Dorothy Dainty's Gay Times and Dorothy Dainty at Glenmore, as well as several Princess Polly titles, including Princess Polly's Playmates and Princess Polly At Play. These titles suggest that her stories center on the everyday lives, play, and friendships of young girls, written in a light and cheerful tone and reflecting the warm domestic atmosphere and coming-of-age themes common in early English and American children's books. Because biographical material is lacking, her literary standing and influence are difficult to assess in detail; her subject matter alone indicates that she was active in children's literature around the turn of the twentieth century.
