About the author

Edith Bancroft was an American writer of young adult literature in the early twentieth century, though public information about her is limited, and her nationality, dates of birth and death, and educational background cannot be confirmed. Her known works are the "Jane Allen" series of girls' novels; the library holds three titles—Jane Allen, Right Guard, Jane Allen, Junior, and Jane Allen, Center—from a five-volume series published between 1917 and 1922 by Cupples & Leon of New York. The stories follow Jane Allen, a girl from a Montana ranch, through her studies, sports, and coming of age at Wellington College, and belong to the early twentieth-century American tradition of girls' school stories, featuring campus life, athletics, and friendship in a light, lively style.
