About the author

Ruby Mildred Ayres (1883–1955) was a British writer of romantic fiction. She was born in England on 28 January 1883, the daughter of an architect. After marrying an insurance broker in 1909 she began writing, and over more than four decades produced roughly 150 love novels that sold over eight million copies worldwide. Many of her works were serialised in newspapers, and some were adapted into films. Her representative titles include The Beggar Man, The Phantom Lover, The Second Honeymoon and A Bachelor Husband. She died in Weybridge on 14 November 1955. Public information about her education and detailed life is limited; her surviving works suggest a popular storyteller who built plots around courtship and marriage for a mass readership, making her one of the prolific writers of early twentieth-century British romantic fiction.
