About the author

Charles Henry Ashdown was a British writer on military history. Little is known about his life in the Chinese-speaking world, and public information is limited: neither his dates nor his educational background are clearly recorded. Judging from his surviving works, he long took an interest in the evolution of European cold weapons and fortifications. He wrote British and Foreign Arms & Armour and British Castles. The former systematically surveys the forms of weapons and the construction of armour, while the latter uses castle architecture as a thread to trace defensive systems and historical change. Both books show a writing approach that attends to physical forms while keeping the historical context in view. Aimed at general readers, his prose is clear and accompanied by illustrations, and the books are still regarded as introductory references by enthusiasts of military history and old castles. Given the limited sources, his academic standing and later influence are hard to assess fully, yet these two works suffice to show his lasting interest in and整理 of the study of arms and castles.
