Azel Ames Jr.

Azel Ames Jr. (1845–1908) was an American physician, public health expert, genealogist and writer. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1871, served as a Massachusetts state legislator, and represented the United States government at several international sanitary conferences. Beyond medicine and public affairs, he combined his medical training with an interest in history, focusing on the early immigration history of New England. His representative work, The Mayflower and Her Log, examines in successive volumes the construction of the Mayflower and its voyage of 1620, making it an indispensable reference for the study of the ship and the Pilgrim settlers. Seven of his works are held in this collection, all devoted to this subject and marked by close attention to original documents and meticulous textual research.
